Lockets are cherished pieces of jewelry

A locket is a pendant that opens. Inside the locket is a space that is generally used to store a photograph or other small momento e.g. a curl of hair. Lockets are usually given to those we love for events e.g. as a birthday or Christmas gift, on holidays such as Valentine’s day or on occasions like christenings, weddings and quite bizarrely during funerals. These lockets are worn around the neck on simple chains and most often hold a photo of the person who presented the locket. They may also form a small part of a charm bracelet worn around the wrist.

Lockets are generally worn on chains around the neck and often hold a photo of the person who gave the locket, or they could form part of a charm bracelet. They come in many shapes such as ovals, hearts and circles and are usually made of precious metals such as gold and silver befitting their status as decorative jewelry. Most lockets hold only one or two photographs, but there are some other specially customized lockets that can hold up to eight photographs. During the Victorian Age, lockets were made to look like spinner lockets that had the bail attached to the necklace spins and not fixed to the locket itself.

Many lockets have engravings on it especially those that are made of sterling silver and platinum. Some have a filigree style of carving with a small cushion in the center that holds a few drops of perfume. This was quite popular in those days when personal hygiene was not looked at as a daily occurrence and people used perfume to mask body odor so that they would not smell in a bad way in close company. Keepsake lockets were also made with a glass pane in the front so that one could see what was inside without opening the locket. Such kinds of lockets were generally used for items like locks of hair which could fall out and lost if the locket was opened frequently. On the other hand, lockets that contained photographs were enclosed on all sides and the photograph itself was secured with clear plastic.

A locket is a perfect gift for any young girl, which each girl will remember and treasure for all time. Most of these are made of sterling silver, 14K gold or are gold filled. As these lockets made for children are quite small, they are usually about ½ inch in width, very little engraving can be carried out on it. These are usually heart shaped with the possibility of the person who presented it carved in the front. Other popular lockets are those made of glass, deity lockets, auspicious symbol lockets and some very rate WWI and WWII era lockets. Even some British and American military uniform locket buttons with miniature working compasses exist.
