An engagement is a huge occasion in a young woman’s life. It meant that she has chosen a suitable man who she considers a future spouse and with whom she is prepared to spend the rest of her life. Therefore, the ring should be extra special. Engagement rings were earlier worn only by the woman when she decided to get betrothed. When worn, it declared to the rest of the males that she is not available in the marriage market. These engagement rings were and are still worn on the third finger of the left hand, believed to have veins that are directly connected to the heart.
Engagement rings are chosen by the prospective groom for his future wife. Most of them contain a single solitaire diamond of good carat thus depicting how much the future groom loves his wife to be. Other rings used for engagement purposes may have a sapphire surrounded by tiny diamonds, quite like what Kate got from Prince Charles, or an emerald surrounded by diamonds. The reasons why sapphires and emeralds are chosen to adorn engagement rings are because these stones are rare and extremely precious as well as expensive. Alternatively, there could be three diamonds set one after the other in a line with the centre diamond bigger than the two side diamonds. These are called trinity engagement rings.
Engagement rings are generally made of gold, either white or yellow, but these days, platinum is also used as material to make these rings. This is because the beauty of diamonds, emeralds and sapphires are visible clearly in these materials. Each engagement ring can be made in a unique design and these are generally called custom engagement rings or designer engagement rings. The prong setting and mounting of the precious stones can also be customized, although the skilled craftsmen in the jewelry store may be able to advise the groom-to-be on which engagement ring will last long.
Most engagement rings are in plain gold, but some men like a slight pattern or design on them. Or there could be two rings intertwined into one depicting the man and woman who are planning to get engaged. Alternatively, the name of the future groom as well as the date of the engagement can be embossed on the underside of the ring. Different customs are prevalent in different countries e.g. in India, both the male and female wear engagement rings that are blessed and given at a special ceremony. In Nordic countries too, both members of the couple wear rings that show they are engaged to each other. Sometimes, these plain band special metal rings serve as wedding rings, for the man while the woman may get a different wedding ring that she will wear over the engagement ring. Nowadays, women have begun to propose to men and this has given rise to the manufacture of male engagement rings.
